These courses are offered through Capt. Lyman Stuart, LLC which is an independent business located at Handy Boat. All lessons will be conducted on a 30' Pearson sloop. Sunset and Day Sails are also available. See the Charter section for details.

Beginner Sailing

Description: This is an introductory course to sailing allowing you to feel confident in sailing a boat of about 20 to 30 feet in length in light to moderate winds and sea conditions in familiar waters. A preparatory standard with no auxiliary power or navigation skills required. Includes Sailing Fundamentals textbook.

Basic Coastal Cruising

Description: This is a more advanced course allowing you to feel confident to cruise safely in local and regional waters as both skipper and crew on an auxiliary powered sailboat of about 20 to 30 feet in length, in moderate winds and sea conditions. Includes a 3 hour Navigation Course.

Adult Refresher

Description: If you've taken sailing lessons before or learned how to sail on your own, but want time on the water with an instructor to learn the finer points of sailing and brush up on your skills, this Adult Refresher will help you do that. You'll practice getting on and off a mooring, trimming the sails, review safety procedures and right-of-way rules, gain more confidence in your sailing ability, and more.

Private Lessons

Description: I offer personalized training to fit your skill level, sailing interests, and specific needs. Private lessons are available from basic to advanced sailing and are offered by arrangement. These lessons are booked in a minimum of 2-hour time slots. Lessons can be on your vessel or mine.

Basic Navigation

Description: This is an introductory course in marine navigation. You will learn chart symbols, reading charts, tides, currents, plotting between points, calculating distance, speed or time. An invaluable course for anyone who plans to be on the water in Maine.

Sail Trim for the Optimum Sailing Experience

Description: This is an advance sail trim class so you can move to the next level in your sailing experience.
The course will cover:
  • Upwind sail trim in all wind conditions and proper boat balance
  • Down wind sail trim and proper boat balance
  • Proper helming in all wind conditions
  • Rigging and tuning for light and heavy wind conditions
  • Course setting and proper tacking angles
Prerequisites: Some sailing experience
Cost: $360.00
Duration: Onboard class room and hands on sailing on board a J-29 will take 6 hours in two three hour sessions
